Denmark, US, and the evolving cheese consumption landscape

Global cheese consumption reveals contrasting leaders based on methodologies. Denmark excels per capita while the US leads in production, showcasing a growing market.

By Metastat Insights News Desk

Recent analysis of global cheese consumption has highlighted a fascinating disparity in ranking methodologies, showcasing different leaders depending on how countries are aggregated. Denmark stands out as the top consumer of cheese per capita, while the United States leads in total cheese production.

Denmark and the United States in cheese consumption

According to the International Dairy Federation's World Dairy Situation 2023 report, Denmark tops the chart with an impressive consumption rate of 62.3 pounds (28.3 kilograms) of cheese per person annually. France follows closely behind with 60.3 pounds. The IDF report is unique in that it treats individual European countries separately rather than averaging them into a single European Union figure.

In contrast, measurements from other sources, including those used by World Population Review, indicate that the United States holds the title for highest total cheese consumption with an average of 17.4 kilograms per person. Canada and Australia rank second and third, respectively. The stark difference arises from the methodology used in data collection, with EU countries combined into a single average, resulting in an overall average of 20.9 kilograms per capita for EU nations.

Production figures paint a different picture

Shifting focus from consumption to production reveals another dimension of cheese consumption trends. The United States produces the highest amount of cheese globally, with an output of 11.1 billion pounds annually, significantly surpassing Germany and France, which produce 4.81 billion and 4.27 billion pounds respectively. While the U.S. leads in production, it ranks lower in per capita consumption, indicating a trend of substantial cheese exports rather than domestic consumption.

Despite not topping per capita rankings, cheese consumption in the United States has shown consistent growth. In 2022, per capita consumption reached a record of 40.14 pounds, a significant increase from 21.9 pounds in 1980 and 32.2 pounds in 2000. This consistent growth, noted since 2011, illustrates a strong demand for cheese, even if it still trails behind Denmark's figures.

Genetics and market expansion dynamics

Genetic factors, particularly lactase persistence, heavily influence cheese consumption patterns. In northern and central Europe, lactase persistence rates range from 80% to 100%, enabling greater tolerance for dairy products. Conversely, countries like Greece and Italy exhibit much lower rates of lactase persistence, impacting their cheese consumption trends.

On a broader scale, the global cheese market continues to expand. Valued at USD 183.79 billion in 2022, projections indicate it could reach USD 256.99 billion by 2030. The EU is also expected to increase its cheese consumption per capita from 20.9 kilograms to 22.6 kilograms by 2030. This consistent upward trend in cheese consumption across multiple regions signifies a resilient market.

The question of which country consumes the most cheese illustrates that context is crucial. Denmark and France lead in individual rankings, while the United States excels in total production. With the global cheese market poised for further growth, stakeholders can gain valuable insights into consumer preferences and production capabilities by examining these evolving trends.
